Use of Target Date Funds in Retirement Plans is on the Rise

In “Target date fund adoption in 2013”, Vanguard finds that the use of target date funds has significantly risen since 2004. The report indicates:

“In 2013, 4 in 10 Vanguard participants were invested in a professionally managed account option and 31% were invested in a single target-date fund (TDF). Use of TDFs in defined contribution (DC) plans continued to grow. At the end of 2013, 86% of plans offered a TDF, 55% of all participants had a position in the funds, and the funds accounted for one-third of total plan contributions…. Because of the growing use of target-date options, we anticipate that nearly 6 in 10 participants and 80% of new plan entrants will be invested in a professionally managed option by 2018.”
