TIAA-CREF is looking for an Associate General Counsel to join our legal team. This role will be based in New York, NY or Charlotte, NC and will report to the Managing Director & Associate General Counsel, Retirement and Insurance Law.

Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice about the design and implementation of new products and services for defined contribution retirement plans, including 403(b), 401(k) and 457 plans, IRAs and related investment options and vehicles.
- Provide legal support for the operations, recordkeeping functions and marketing and sales forces both on institutional and individual aspects of the pension and retirement business.
- Monitor and help implement changes in federal and state laws and regulations affecting the pension business.
Job Specialties:
- Employee benefits experience with knowledge of Internal Revenue Code, ERISA, and related regulations and issues impacting section 403(b) plans, 401(a) plans, 401(k) plans, 457(b) plans, 457(f) plans and IRAs.
- Experience working with retirement plan documents and plan design.
- Experience interacting with IRS, DOL, and insurance department regulators.
- Knowledge of fiduciary principles and prohibited transaction analysis.
- Familiarity with insurance regulations impacting annuity contracts funding retirement plans, and with insurance rules and filing requirements.
Qualifications:
- Law degree required.
- Legal experience as a Benefits Lawyer in the pension/retirement industry or law firm environment is required; at least eight years experience is preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of relevant pension laws as well as a working knowledge of relevant securities regulations is required.
- Strong presentation and negotiation skills and the ability to thrive in a decentralized office environment.
- Knowledge of legal issues pertaining to recordkeeping operations and platforms a plus.
