Research Finds Continued Growth in Retirement Plan Assets

The Investment Company Institute reports in "Retirement Assets Total $20.9 Trillion in Second Quarter 2013" that retirement plan assets continue to grow. They found that:

"Total U.S. retirement assets were $20.9 trillion as of June 30, 2013, up 1.0 percent from $20.7 trillion on March 31, 2013. Retirement savings accounted for 34 percent of all household financial assets in the United States at the end of the second quarter of 2013."

They also found continued growth in target date funds. The report states:

"As of June 30, 2013, target date mutual fund assets totaled $540 billion, an increase of 2.1 percent in the second quarter. Retirement accounts held the bulk of target date mutual fund assets: 90 percent of target date mutual fund assets were held through DC plans and IRAs."
