New Vanguard Study Examines Retirement Plan Trends

A recent study published by Vanguard reflects recent trends for retirement plans. The research found that the average account balance was $86,212, which was an increase of 10% compared to the prior year. For participants who had a balance since 2007, the median account balance increased by 67% over five years. They also found that nearly 90% of participants who had been invested saw their account balances rise from 2007 to 2012.

The study also found increased usage of target date funds and automatic enrollment. They indicated that 84% of companies offered target date funds in 2012, compared to only 39% in 2007. Similarly, automatic enrollment increased to 50% by large plans in 2012 from only 40% in 2007.
